Rock hounding attracts amateurs as well as avid collectors. The geologic history of the Clear Lake basin, with eons of seismic activity, accounts for the abundance of two distinctive minerals, obsidian and Lake County diamonds. Obsidian, or “bottle rock,” is found throughout the area, it was used extensively for fishing spear points by the Native Americans. The “diamonds,” or beta quartz crystals, are concentrated through the region southeast of Mount Konocti, and are easily spotted after a rain, which washes off the red soil in which they are found.
