Hikers may select the degree of isolation and difficulty they wish. The state parks offer pleasant hikes up to several hours in length, Boggs Mountain State Forest, Cow Mountain Recreation Area, and Mendocino National Forest attract hikers of a hardier nature. In eastern Lake County, the Cache Creek Basin Recreational Area and Walker Ridge Recreation Area are operated by the Bureau of Land Management; BLM areas are available also to off-road vehicle enthusiasts, horseback riders, and hunters.
